The study of Latin America —its societies, cultures, history, and artistic production— constitutes an exciting and challenging intellectual project, which can only be undertaken through the collaborative effort of a variety of specialized scholars whose academic work concentrates on some of the multiple facets of this field. The Latin American Studies Program at Washington University, St. Louis, articulates the work of a distinguished group of scholars based in the departments of Romance Languages and Literatures, Anthropology, Political Science, Art, and History. Some of these professors hold joint appointments with the International and Area Studies Program. Others collaborate with the Latin American Studies Program through the courses they offer in their own departments, and through their qualified participation in academic conferences and cultural activities focused on Latin America. The variety of methodological approaches offered to graduate and undergraduate students at Washington University, as well as the large range of topics covered by faculty members in their research, provide a solid foundation for the advancement of knowledge on Latin America, both within the ample scope of traditional disciplines and in the most innovative directions open by new critical and theoretical approaches in this field of study. At the same time, the Latin American Studies Program offers a vast array of opportunities for study abroad, and encourages students at all levels to combine academic work with immersion-type programs that allow them to enhance language skills and experience Latin American cultures in all their variety and complexity. Many faculty members at Washington University are directly involved with the organization and coordination of international programs (summer institutes, semesters abroad, internships, and the like). Washington University offers, then, a unique opportunity for the interdisciplinary study of Latin American history and cultures, and welcomes all students interested in a diversified and updated approach to some of the most interesting fields of study in academe today.
