  General Description
Washington University’s Latin American Studies Program offers a six-week study abroad program from mid May to late June at the International Center for Language and Culture at the Universidad Iberoamericana, in Puebla, Mexico. This program combines two Spanish courses during the day, cultural workshops, fieldtrips, activities with Mexican students, some weekend trips and housing at homestays. The program offers 6-8 Washington University credits with course options at different levels depending on the student’s preparation in Spanish language and an optional independent study. Field trips to Mexico City and to an additional location are included in the program. Tuition will cover housing, some meals, courses, and field trips, and the Washington University on-site Director, Professor Joe Barcroft.

Areas of Study
Students may study Spanish and Mexican at the beginning and intermediate levels. Content courses within the humanities and social sciences in the regular Ibero class roster and internships are available to those with sufficient Spanish proficiency. Internships may require students to stay in Puebla through July. There is a track available for Pre-med students that includes a 3 credit course on Public Health in Mexico and a 3 credit internship at Ibero’s medical clinic. This track requires proficiency at least at the 308 level.

Term
Summer

Dates
mid May - late June

Application Deadline
February 15

Eligibility
Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and an interest in studying Spanish and/or Latin American culture are eligible to apply. Internships and the pre-med program require the completion of Spanish 307 or its equivalent.

WU Credits
Students may study Spanish at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Beginning and intermediate Spanish students will enroll in 3 credits of intensive language and 3 credits of Mexican culture. Those with advanced Spanish language will enroll in 6 credits of their choice in the regular Ibero offerings, contingent on advising by program director. Students with advanced Spanish may substitute an internship for one of the courses. All students would have the option of a 2 credit independent study/research overseen by the WU on-site Director or any other WU professor. Coursework is usually in the mornings. Students may earn a maximum of 8 WU credits.

The advanced courses may earn up to 6 elective credits toward the Spanish major or minor, but that will only be determined back on campus in the fall upon evaluation of work done. Alternatively, the course on Mexican culture, politics, or the supervised internship can fulfill 3 credits of advanced level coursework in IAS and the classes in Spanish on cultural issues can be used to help complete the IAS language requirement. Upon return to Washington University, students will take a placement test to determine the appropriate level for further language study.

Location
Puebla, Mexico

The Universidad de las Americas is located in the city of Puebla about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City. Established by the Spanish in 1531, Puebla was the principal city of colonial Mexico. Puebla is well-known throughout Mexico for textiles, exquisitely decorated pottery and tiles, and the architectural beauty of its buildings. Its historic downtown remains a Spanish-colonial treasure filled with elegant 17th and 18th century European architecture and art. When you add a temperate climate year-around, friendly and courteous residents (called poblanos) and delicious regional cuisine, Puebla becomes the ideal place to learn Spanish.

Housing
The program offers housing at homestays.

Student Life
This program combines Spanish language study, cultural workshops, special lectures, fieldtrips, activities with Mexican students and two day trips to Mexico City and neighboring cities such as Taxco, Oaxaca and Veracruz.

On-Site Support
The Washington University on-site Director, will be available to assist students on the program. Ibero staff will also provide significant coordination and support.
